I have an old copy of Guitar Player circa 1972 in which Pete says the only
thing he used was the Dyna Comp compression pedal. I don't know what else
might be preventing you from getting the dirty sound you want, but as a
guess-the SG Special that Pete used during the Leeds era was a
non-humbucking pickup. To my ear, that pickup captured distortion much
better than the subsequent Les Pauls Pete used. Something about those old
SG's...listen to old recording of Big Brother And The Holding Company
(SG's) or Cream (the famous Clapton psychedelic SG) or for that matter
Angus Young of AC/DC! Terrific distortion, controlled and otherwise.

Also, if you have access to it, look at the Sparks/Underture footage in The
Kids Are Alright.....Pete hits the Dyna Comp pedal immediately before the
glorious overdrive "E" chord climax, then kills it to finish off the
number.
