I ran conventional oil until 10K then switched over to synthetic.  Have been using Valvoline Synthetic, and most recently Mobil One.  I don't know about any leaks.  I have never added any oil between oil changes.  Maybe you have a leak or are burning some lightly?

The oil filter I think is a piece of cake to get off.  It's very easy to get to and a lot easier than all VW 4 cyls. where the oil filter is between the oil pan and radiator support!  Although, if you have a very large socket, it is recommended to get the filter housing off with this thus not damaging the plastic housing.  Sometime in 97 I think, they went to the new cartridge insert.  VR6's before this had problems blowing off the spin on oil filters.  You can get these inserts on-line from GPR or somewhere.  The dealer can charge up to like $20 for these filters where you can get them on-line for less than $10.
