RE:
I have
owned a '96 Jetta GLX and a '95 Passat GLX (both with VR6 and 5-speed
manual) for the last four years. Both cars have
identical engines (hp, torque) and
the
Passat is only 100 lbs heavier. The Passat has taller (higher) gearing
that
makes
it accelerate slower than the Jetta (it's also quieter on the
highway). The
Passat
does 0-60 in 8.1 sec, the Jetta does 0-60 in 7.1
sec, which is significantly
faster. I have compared the rpms at the same speed on the highway
in the same
gear(s), and the gearing is definitely the difference.
That one subtle difference
totally changes the feel of each car. Heh, I'm the speed
freak, so the Jetta is mine,
and
the Passat is the wife's.
The
differences between any automatic and a manual trans are much greater than
the differences in gearing between my two cars. Besides
the torque converter slip,
the gearing of most autos is much higher than manuals.
Compare the 0-60 of any
car with auto to manual, and auto is usually at least a second
slower.

Hey Guys
I have a question? Is there any
difference in the engine or gearing, between a 94' Passat GLX
(automatic) and a 98' Jetta GLX (manual). The reason I am asking
is because I have my Jetta GLX and a friend in Texas said that he rode in a
94' Passat that had the Vr6 in it. He said that it wasn't that
fast! I think that my Jetta is very fast!! And I was wondering
if there had been any major changes since then to make me think that my car
is faster??
