The Best Head Unit

First, if that subject header doesn't get your attention, seek the advice of a
professional.

Second, while I'm sure the archives are full of reading material, I'm too damn
lazy to figure out how to read them. I'm sure everyone with a head unit that is
"better than your average bear" is more than willing to share their thoughts on
premium sound upgrade.

A few givens: People on this list already have (or have had?) the BOSE system,
complete with head unit, amp and speakers. Most have been at the minimum happy
with the performance. For those more well educated on car audio, they have
upgraded their head units. These are the list members' brains I want to pick.

As you can perhaps tell from the previous posts, I'm happy with the compelte BOSE
system, but understand a better head unit exists. I've been reading this list for
about 2 years and remember many posts on the topic of audio sound. Specifically,
I want to break this down into two parts:

1) In your opinion, what is the best head unit available to improve on the
stock BOSE system? Why?

2) For this head unit install, what special considerations must be taken into
account for the install into the surrounding BOSE components (i.e. compatibility
with amp and speakers).

I'm guessing that one simply cannot speed over to Circuit City, buy the top of the
line Head Unit and rewire the install? I seem to remember some talk about
compatibility issues.

Please take your time to explain the details. I'm sure the list will appreciate
the upcoming replys.
