You should be able to give your parts guy the VIN off your car and he
should be able to give you the right one.  But if you want to, you can
take off the canister (you can drain the filter/canister using a 6mm
allen wrench first) and see what kind of filter is in there.  Unscrew
the canister and give the filter a tug.  If it comes out easy and you
see a big spring like thingy, it's a 96.5+ filter.  If the filter is
simply clipped in to the canister at the bottom, it's the older filter.  

AutoZone carries the filters, if there is one in your area.  The P/N for
the new style is 442 and the old style is 441.  They are Hengst filters
inside a Deutsch box.
