2 VR6 Oil filters

Hello everyone!  I just joined the list and I have to
say that it is very informative and well participated
in.  

I recently purchased my 96 GLX and am about to do my
1st oil change. There are 2 oil filters available
(according to my local VW parts store):  one for
93-96.5 & one for 96.5 & up.  

Question:  What are the difference(s)?  Can I use one
instead of the other (vice-versa)?
