My '98 only had this problem for about the first 2000 miles. I haven't noticed it since (maybe I'm just used to it!!!). I would usually go up to 2nd and then into 1st. The other option is to slightly rev the engine in nuetral with the clutch engaged (foot off the pedal) then depress the cluth and 1st should come easier.
