Yep.  However, if it is exceedingly difficult for you to shift into first
even when using this technique, then it is most likely that you have one of
two problems.  Either your 1st gear syncro is on its way out, or your clutch
is wearing out.  These are normal problems that can occur on any manual
shift car.

I'm not aware of any GLX or VR6 specific problem with regard to engaging 1st
gear.  Then again, I can't even remember if the clutches on our cars are
cable or hydraulic; so I could be wrong.
