I had a Maaco paint job on my '88 Jetta GLI and it was a major mistake.
Granted I did not want to spend much on a 9 year old car, but their work
made things worse.  I have also had work done by a true perfectionist, what
a difference.  It will cost you, but this is one of those areas where you
get what you pay for.  I would be cautious about dealers, my local VW
dealer is a nightmare.  I found a good body shop by word of mouth.  If you
want a high quality job you will need to have all the parts you want
painted removed from the car and then painted.  Removing panels can be time
consuming and this is why high quality body work can get expensive.  If you
feel comfortable working on your car (and can do without it for some time)
you can remove the parts yourself.  The actual painting and finishing is
not normally too expensive.  Good luck.
