ANDY, I have a 97 GLX and I sat in it for 30 minutes before I could get the
key to work yesterday... AND THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED!!!
When I went in for my 5k routine maintenance, I complained about it. They
said it was fine and just needed lubrication. Hell! It has happened 10 times
since then. Because of it, I was late for work 4 times and my review is
coming up next week. If my boss slams me or denies my raise because of
tardiness, I'm gonna be pissed at VW!!!!! I plan on BITCHIN' UP A STORM if
they don't take care of it! Especially after reading this mail I got the
other day.... check it out!

Dude tell your dealer to fuck off and re-key the ignition under
warranty, ASAP!

The EXACT SAME THING happened to my car and several others. It will
eventually fail and leave you walking. I hope you are parked in a "nice"
neigborhood when it happens.

I don't want to scare you but I am speaking from experience. It happened
to my '95 GLX and I eventually had to have the WHOLE CAR including the
seats re-keyed. What a pain in the ass! It was all under waranty.
Covered.

If you don't want the hassle just have him re-key the ignition only and
then use your original key for the doors etc. BE SURE THEY ORDER THE
RIGHT PART! My dealer accidentally installed a passat ignition tumbler
in my GLX and when I went to pick it up they drove up and I turned it
off and on again and it wouldnt turn off a second time! It was stuck
ON!!!!...the engine running!!! You are not alone.

GOOD LUCK!!! ANd you'll see Jesus before I pay to have my car COMPLETELY
relocked.... 2 keys.... BULLSHEETS!!!
