Hard Hitting Michael Gee Explains Celtics Fast-Break Problems

Good analytical pay column by the Herald writer yesterday.

First money paragraph:

The Celts' group personality is bound by the same ties as it was when Walker
was here. The ferocious commitment O'Brien requires on defense... requires
an enormous expenditure of energy. If the other team refuses to allow easy baskets
as well, the Celts have much less energy to run around and get open for easy shots.

 Second+ money paragraph:

The Celts are not a running team. For one thing, they don't rebound well
enough to create that many fast breaks. They're a defensive-oriented team
with one super scorer. Boston's task on offense is to use motion in the half
court game for easy open looks... The Celts must grind to win... Defense will
keep them in nearly every game. But blowout triumphs will be rare, too.

(Ray's Solutions: Fire O'Brien; Bring in an offensive-minded coach; get a real
point guard; Improve rebounding by playing Perkins and Hunter; add more
passers and creators to the roster; Ainge make a few trades - And
likely to happen: Ainge makes a few trades, O'Brien stays, Perkins plays.)
