No, I think it was forced by the leak. The question is, who leaked it, and why?
It's possible that someone in the organization wanted to force the owners' hand
and get Ainge ASAP. It's also possible that the owners leaked it themselves
(through someone) to encourage Ainge to make up his mind, possibly so that
Portland, or some other team, doesn't become a consideration for Ainge. In any
case, the sooner, the better. 
I also don't think it can do anything but help in the current series. Whether
it mattters in the current series is doubtful, but you have to think lighting a
little fire under the coach and the players has to help.
