C's Management Cost-Cutting: Long-Term Employees

Steve Bulpett - Boston Herald
Cuts hit front office

A day after getting Vin Baker to agree to give up part of his salary to
get his personal problems dealt with, the Celtics' new ownership moved
to save more money. Four members of the front office were let go,
including vice president of sales Steve Riley, who has been with the
organization longer than anyone except Red Auerbach.

Media relations assistant Carol Shackelford, a 13-year employee, was
also let go, as were community relations and E-services manager Brian
Perillo and account executive Sarah Watson.

Riley, who joined the Celtics family in 1976 and worked his way up
through the organization, was a popular figure for the franchise in the
business community. His experience and contacts helped the club weather
the storm through the lean years of the 1990s and early this decade.

(Me: Tossing in the Baker unpaid leave situatiion, there seems to be a
pattern
establishing itself of the Celtics management reducing costs in order to
mitigate
or soothe their $80 million overpayment for the team. This economizing
could
have a direct effect on the replacing of Wallace/O'Brien, while they're
still
under contract.)
