     I think that, in the long run, Shaq did a brilliant thing, although 
unintentionally.  First, opposing players will be wondering "Wow!  Is he 
going to get ME with one of those punches?"  Second, the league has to 
acknowledge that Shaq does get hacked, so there will be more fouls called on 
the defenders; third, a backlash might emerge that not only cracks the whip 
oin the defenders, but lets Shaq run amok (more than usual)  for a while.
     In exchange, he sits out a few games and the Lakers go .500 or better 
for that stretch, while Shaq rests up for the playoffs.
