RE: Hardaway/Strickland; Cheap Gaston

From: Peter Delevett <pdelevett@xxxxxxxxx>

I like Strick better than another, similar player
whose name has been bandied about here, Greg Anthony.
Anthony may be a purer point who can run an offense
better, but he's a dreadful shooter, and Strick can
provide the same defense and toughness in a bigger,
stronger package.
While Anthony's averages (except for assists) were down last year with the Bulls and the Bucks, the three previous years with Portland featured an admittedly "dreadful" FG% hovering around 40%, but a 3P% of about the same.
A PG who can pass, defend, and shoot the long ball -- sounds tailor made for Obieball. Best is better offensively, but not a great defender, and isn't all that tall, if I remember correctly. Hardaway scares me, as does Cassell, though with Sam I Am, you at least get someone on this side of the hill, if you know what I mean.

Like you seemed to say, Peter, I'd sort of like seeing Strick re-signed *and* a decent pg added, but I don't think the team is going to carry more than 12 guys. Positionally, maybe Obie thinks of Delk as a shooting guard only, and for all I know, he may even play S Williams there. Most likely we'll get one more signing. Strick is the fulcrum of possibilities for me:
I'd like to see Strick back, more than I'd like to see a bargain-basement PG free agent signed, but perhaps not as much as seeing someone from what'
s left of a top-tier (such as it is) pg free agent pool.

But if was a betting man, I'd say the team will indeed grab that theoretical bargain basement point guard.
