...also the Collins twins, Hassell, Varda and workout warrior Stephen
Hunter are the only remaining guys on Boston's schedule.

C's might wait for 7-footer: Gasol could be a year away
by Steve Bulpett
Thursday, June 21, 2001

(...)And if Gasol is still on the board at 10, the Celtics will not be
frightened off by the fact he'll be a year away.
``If we select him, it is with the assumption that he will not be in
uniform for us in this coming season,'' Wallace said. ``Now, that's not
something we're cavalier about.
``You'd like to think that if you're picking 10 and 11 you're going to get
a contribution out of one if not both of those players. And obviously next
year's a big year for us. But at the same time, we're here to win a
championship and move in that direction, so if there's someone out there
who you think can help you do that, you've got to take a very close look at
him - whether it's for this year or next year.''
Added Wallace wryly, ``Wasn't there a guy who once sat out a year before
joining this franchise? Was it Bird? Was that the name?
``Now, I'm not trying to misconstrue Pau Gasol with Larry Bird, but having
multiple picks (as the Celts did when Bird was taken in 1978; Freeman
Williams was selected two spots later) makes it much more tolerable to
gamble.''

Celtics notes
Notre Dame's Troy Murphy stayed in town and worked out again yesterday when
Stanford 6-10 forward Jarron Collins came in. Murphy continues to impress
as a heady player with an excellent shooting touch, but Gasol may get in
his way on draft night.
Collins' twin brother, Jason, will be in for an audition Sunday with
Yugoslav forward Ratko Varda. DePaul center Steven Hunter, who took some
giant steps at the predraft camp in Chicago, will be in Saturday, and
Trenton Hassell, a 6-5 shooting guard from Austin Peay, will be here Monday.
It's doubtful the Celts will be able to get anyone else in for a second look.
``There is the possibility we may be traveling out to see some people on
Monday and Tuesday, but nobody has any room right now,'' Wallace said.
