How far can we go with Walker? Building the team around his talents and shortcomings seems to be the soup du jour.
Making Antoine the point guard, even for twenty minutes a game, precludes a real point guard from playing here, even if the present policy of the point guard getting the ball over half court and then passing to Antoine didn't. This seems like a prescription for disaster.
I don't discount Walkers heart and desire to win, nor his improvements in areas of his game, like foul shooting, over the years, but I just can't see him coming to camp in shape to play the three or having any kind of point guard handles and the pass first, run the ball up the floor, mentality, that I would want in my point guard.
What to do?
Trade him. Now!
Atlanta: Ratliff, Brevin Knight.
Minnesotta: Szczerbiak, Brandon.
Memphis: Bibby, Rahim.
Chicago: Brand.
We have threee picks to add to a trade and get more talent or move up in the draft.
On the other hand, he is such a unique talent and has that fire in his belly, that you know he wants it so badly, and if he would get in shape to play the three and work on his post moves, which were once almost unstoppable, for any but the best big men.
As Pitino tried to get Walker in that frame of mind, Antoine went in the other direction and developed his outside shooting and now he wants to be the point guard. O'Brien dosn't want to make that same mistake, so he is going in the other direction and giving in to Antoine's fantasies.
With zone defenses coming back, we need a shot blocker, rebounder, defender on the floor at all times. Antoine will not give us that at the four. We also need better outside shooters. While Antoine made strides last year and his 3 point % was respectable, he can't guard anyone on the primeter.
I'm afraid this team will be very confused next season and O'Brien will be gone by Christmass.
