Pitino tells Celts: Play safely

Boston Celtics forward Walter McCarty, who was upstairs at the Buzz Club
when teammate Paul Pierce was stabbed seven times the other night, said
yesterday coach Rick Pitino has warned the hoopsters to be ``very
careful'' when they're out on the town.

``He wants us to realize that the situation that we are in, people are
going try to do certain things,'' said McCarty, who claims he has no
idea about the motive behind the stabbing in the Stuart Street club.
``But we're just looking to have a good time. We can't sit in the house.

``This just shouldn't have happened in the first place,'' he said.
``Paul's a good guy, never any trouble. But we'd hate to have to stay
in. We're all 26, 23, 24, so we're going to go out.''

Pierce, 22, is recovering at New England Medical Center from stab
wounds, one of which punctured his lung and another which penetrated
seven inches into his back.

Last night, three associates of local rappers Made Men - one of whom is
the group's bodyguard - began turning themselves in to police to answer
to assault charges.

McCarty said he knows ``a couple'' of the guys, including leader Raymond
``Ray Dog'' Scott. He even chatted him up at the Buzz on Sunday night.

``They're pretty good guys,'' he said. ``We have no problems.''

But what about the Made Men's posse?

``It's like in the NBA when you travel in these big groups, some guys
don't know how to act and it's always the star in the group that gets
blamed for it,'' he said. ``The player has no control over what the
people around them do.''

Then maybe it's time for the posses to be benched.
