Celtics Acquire Herren and Stith from Denver for Pack and Cheaney

Hey Celt,

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Celtics announced today that they have acquired Fall River, MA native Chris Herren and guard Bryant Stith from the Denver Nuggets for Robert Pack and Calbert Cheaney.

Herren, who ranked fifth in the nation in assists in 1998-99 as a senior at Fresno State, was a second-round (33rd overall) draft pick of the Denver Nuggets in the 1999 NBA Draft. He played in 45 games as a rookie with the Nuggets, making one start, while averaging 3.1 points and 2.5 assists in 13.3 minutes. The 6-2 guard played in one game at Boston College before suffering a season-ending wrist injury. He transferred to Fresno State, sat out one year and then played three seasons, climbing to second on the school's career assists list with 465. He also ranks seventh with 138 career steals. He averaged a career-high 17.5 ppg as a sophomore, when he was named to the All-WAC first team, an honor he received as a junior. He handed out a career-high 7.2 assists per game while adding 11.4 points per game as a senior.

Entering his ninth season in the league, Stith has career averages of 10.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 458 career games. Selected in the first round (13th overall) of the 1992 NBA Draft by the Nuggets, Stith enjoyed his best season as a pro in 1996-97 when he averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists per contest. Last year for Denver he averaged 5.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 15.4 minutes over 45 games. The 6-5 guard shot .455 from the field, .304 from three-point range, .831 from the free throw line and scored in double figures 11 times, with two games of 20 or more points last season. He finished his college career as the University of Virginia's all-time leader in scoring (2,516 points), minutes (4,391) and free throws made (690). As a senior, he led Virginia to a 20-13 mark while averaging 20.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He left school ranked No. 4 on the all-time Atlantic Coast Conference scoring list.

Signed as a free agent on August 5, 1999, Cheaney appeared in 67 games last season for Boston averaging 4.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 19.5 minutes per game. The seven-year NBA veteran has career averages of 11.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Acquired on August 16, 2000 along with forward John Williams from the Dallas Mavericks and a 2001 first round draft pick from the Utah Jazz in exchange for forward Danny Fortson and guard Dana Barros, Pack never saw action in a Celtics uniform.
