Re: Los Angeles Box Score

Boy, I'm glad I'm not a Clippers fan.

If our starting frontline had produced 56 points and 36 rebounds and we
still lost, I'd be really upset at the coach. After all, they even held the
Celts frontcourt starters to 10-34 shooting. Chris Ford has a truly
bewildering team. A clear ROY candidate arrives back-to-back with a #1
overall pick at center, joining one of the more coveted and polished NBA
power forwards in Mo Taylor.

And yet they've all but given up on themselves this season in terms of
trying to contend for a playoff berth, not even halfway into the season.

Three brief additional comments:

1) I don't particularly mind Paul Pierce forcing shots ever since his
return from the ankle injury (he's shooting .393 in nine games despite
leading the Celts in scoring for five straight games and counting). In the
end, this is far preferable IMO to Pierce's rookie season when he showed a
worrying tendency to disappear following his similar injury. Pierce has
earned a right to try to take over games, and he actually succeeded last
night. The fans certainly would prefer Pierce to shoot bricks than for
Walker to shoot at all. Pierce does a lot more than just shoot. He's second
in the NBA in steals, I believe, and certainly our best all around player
statistically.

2) Meanwhile, Fortson slumped to a wretched 3-4 shooting last night (he
came into the game shooting .762 from the floor). No wonder why he only got
14 minutes despite just one personal foul and three offensive caroms among
his five rebounds. ;-) In today's Herald, Rick Pitino once again said that
Fortson has a chance to be one of the NBA's "better rebounders per minute."
Terrific!

3) Last night former Celt Michael Smith (4.9 ppg in 111 games) broadcast
for the Clippers on the radio. In today's Herald, it states that Jimmy
Rodgers had pushed to draft Tim Hardaway but Red Auerbach overruled him and
went with the 6-10 BYU forward. I guess even Auerbach isn't totally
infallable (the highschooler Shawn Kemp was also available). That's an
example of the Celtics struggles to rebuild being the fault of their own
scouting errors rather than entirely just unforseeable tragedy (Bias and
Lewis).
