Faked time out?

There was an interesting play in the game last night where the Nets were 
bringing the ball upcourt and about to take a time out, so their 3 big men 
were just standing around in the backcourt near their team's bench waiting 
for the timeout call while a gaurd (Marbury?) brought the ball to the front 
court before calling time.  All 5 Celtics were just standing around in the 
frontcourt waiting for the timeout.  Then suddenly the gaurd makes a quick 
dribble and bounce pass toward the baseline and there's Sherman Douglas 
sneaking in to try to get a layup.  Paul Pierce was forced to come across 
the lane and foul him.  

My question is, was that a play by design, or just a heads up play by the 
Nets' gaurds?  As a head coach would you be mad at not getting the time 
out when you asked for it, even though you scored?
