Re: 3 Guards

I would make the case that Sprewell is as much a forward (a la Scottie
Pippen) as he is a guard. The NY lineup is a lot closer to Anderson, Mercer
and Pierce in size and "physicality" than it is to Van Excel, Billups and
Mercer. In fact, Ward's a lot tougher than Kenny, and Sprewell's probably
tougher than Pierce right now. Put a 6' 3" shooting guard into that NY
lineup, instead of Sprewell, and what do you have?

Some Western conference teams have had limited success with three true
guards. Someone mentioned Pheonix. But I can't remember ever thinking a
team constructed like that was even a threat to win the championship. No
doubt, someone will get back to me with a historical example of some team
that won it all with three guards, so I'll just say that I don't think it's
the way to go. Especially when you're on a "one year plan" and have just
acquired the "final piece of the puzzle".
