Give it a shot! Look at what McHale has done in Minnesota. He came in and
inherited a horrible team. But he made a few bold trades (Rider for
Hollywood Robinson and Bill Curly), made some bold yet wise drafting
decisions, and found a diamond in the rough when he signed Dean Garrett. His
only mistake was the need to sign former Celt Stinko Vrankenstein.

Bird was perhaps the greatest player ever, as we all know. But I think we
can all agree that was party due to having knowledge of the game. I think he
could pull the right strings to pull the Celts out of the gutter, and those
plans *won't* include such free agent signings as Frank Brickowski, Alton
Lister, and "Out of Service" Pervis.

Also consider the influence he would have on free agents. Who wouldn't be in
awe if Bird stepped forward and offered a contract? I know the free agent
pool is shallow this year, but next year is when the pocketbooks will open
up. Get him in now to get his bearings, then let him loose on the Garnett's,
Joe Smith's, Bryant Reeves' and Brebt Barry's of the 1998 Free Agent class.

My two cents, anyway...
