True but after seeing the crowd's reaction to the equipment smashing
one can imagine Kit Lambert telling the band, "Keep doing it, keep
doing it!"

The first auto-destruction moment was supposedly an accident.  We know
*that* wasn't planned.  But I think after that the band & its management
realized they had stumbled onto a great promotional tool.

I'm not discounting the sincerity of the smash-ups - the lads were
angry.  And it seemed to give the audience a cathartic exhilaration, as
well.  

I see the equipment smashing more as an angry, sincere, manager-approved
gimmick.  But a gimmick nonetheless.
