Classic Performances of The Who vol 1
I would like to cheer hooray for Stewart Hellman, for at last getting a
review of this seriously overlooked Photographic book. This months Record
Collector has a review of the publication by our very own Ed Hanel, here is
the transcript of the review. Enough to say I hope some of you do pursue
this book:-
Photographer Stewart Hellman was smart enough to show up for the Whos 7/7/70
Tanglewood Concert, and successfully apply for a photographers pass. He has
now published the results in a private edition.
Obviously a labour of love, Classic Performances is a picture book that fits
in the category 'for completists only'. Tanglewood however has passed into
Who lore as a legendary show (please note this comment Rich!) which makes
any images of the event interesting to hardcore fans. Even if too many shots
are ;not quite in focus, this adds to the charm of a fans love for the
greatest rock and roll band in the world-after all, many rock images of the
era were clouded for one chemical reason or another.
As with Ollie Lundens 1995 collection the Who in Sweden, the enthusiast can
overlook the shortcomings, and enjoy the vicarious thrill of pictures that
evoke the thought of "wish I was there". Always visually exciting, the
primal essence of the Whos stage act was the most diffucult to capture on
film. Kudos to Hellman who fared no better or worse than many other
photographers, for his willingness to share his efforts.

Of course Rich the review did not contain the little snippet including the
nod to you, I guess you know what this is relating to ;-)
Well done Stew wherever you are, I am so happy that at last you have gained
some recognition for your work, I sincerely hope it helps to recoup much of
your losses both financial and otherwise.
cheers

"As you can see, an encore is impossible.
We have drums everywhere. As they go to the dressing room,
please say an incredible thank you to The Who."
