FERRARI 400i SPYDER 

Though most enthusiasts are familiar with Ferraris
400 models and their derivatives, not so many will
have come across this model. Never offered direct from
the factory as a convertible, there have been a small
number of drophead conversions offered, this being one
of twelve conversions commissioned by London Ferrari
agents, H R Owen. As a full convertible, the 400
Spyder offered room for luggage and passengers at a
time when the only open car from the factory was the
308 GTB, a superb car in its own right, though
definitely a two-seater and lacking the full open air
experience due to its targa style removable roof
panel. 

Supplied new in 1980 to an avid Ferrari enthusiast who
kept the car for twelve months, this car is believed
to have had three owners. The second was the legendary
rock musician, Pete Townsend, who purchased the
vehicle in 1981 when it was converted to spyder
specification for H R Owen. The car was then kept in
his stable for the next five years.

The coachwork, finished in Sierra blue metallic, and
the fully lined power operated hood in blue canvas
duck type material are both reported to be in
excellent condition. The interior is trimmed in
Magnolia hide, this being described as in good
original order and free from cracks and tears.
Mechanically, the 4.8-litre V12 engine and all other
components are said to be in good order with the
desirable feature of a full stainless steel exhaust
system having been fitted. 

The documentation file accompanying this rare vehicle
contains extensive service history, including invoices
totalling over #60,000. Also expected are previous MOT
certificates and a current MOT to June next year,
along with the V5 registration document and the
results of a recently applied for DVLA ownership
search. 

Of the twelve Spyders commissioned by H R Owen, only
eight are believed to survive and this therefore
represents an opportunity to purchase a very rare
Ferrari indeed.
