Re: Tommy the movie, mostly

So was a lot of shit.

Lew:

No, and I was going to go into a detailed account of what is great in the Tommy movie, but Alan beat me to it and while he didn't mention everything I would have, the point is well made.

Only if you want/like serious subject matter made into cartoons.

It would have looked ridiculous treated seriously. I mean, look at Jesus Christ Superstar (the movie). The scenes where he's supposed to be angry make him look like a wimp.

Now I _know_ I did not take too much LSD, but obviously others
_did_.

I didn't take "too much" (9 times), but Yes it IS a movie best viewed when you "turn off your mind, relax and float downstream." Not that I'm advocating it, kids...

Most of the serious music the film is based upon was remade into
cartoon versions for the film.

Like I said, you can't take a song like Pinball Wizard and make a serious script that shows a guy getting nationally known because he can play pinball.

...and sucking their thumbs with their "woobie"

Hey, not all of us were doing that. As I recall, I got my security by reading brilliant Science Fiction written by the likes of Isaac Asimov, Phillip K. Dick and Ted White.

***EVERYTHING*** from "Quadrophenia" is superiour. Little
Tommy's only contenders are:

I most definitely disagree with you here. Quad is almost a mirror image of Tommy. Tommy has lyrical flights which only a fantasy can produce, and Quad is a down to earth realistic tale. So lyrically Tommy has the more beautiful images. Quad is more to the point, yeah, but not as poetic.

Fuck it, I'm stayin' home. Just get into your Pontiac and drive...

You wouldn't come defend your band? Tut, tut.

Actually, I consider TheBeaTles to be a better PoP group,

Of COURSE, but then The Who weren't a Pop group. Only on AQO and FD, both of which are their worst studio albums. The Who weren't too good at Pop, Psychedelia, or Glam. So yeah, other bands beat them there. But they were the greatest ROCK band...no one could touch them.

I truly thought Gov'+ Mule was the most powerful band in the
world out playing live onstage. WRONG!

I coulda told you that. The best two live bands out there are Pearl Jam and Widespread Panic...although I haven't seen Panic with the new guitarist, so that could have changed now. Haynes is great in everything he does, I'd grant you. But I'd say they're a great COVER band more than anything else.

appreciate it for what it was during that time period. I see what the

Jon:

There you go, man. Keep as cool as you can. Face piles of trials with smiles...sorry, got off on a Moody Blues tangent there. Yeah, you're right...it has to be seen as a period piece. So does Quad. If you consider they might have tried to make Tommy the way they did Quad, it wouldn't have worked. It would have failed under the weight of its own pretentiousness. And think, Quad did NOT rely on the music...it was there, but in the background. It would have been JUST as good without the Who music. Tommy couldn't have been made without the music. I will say this: if they HAD made Tommy in a cartoon manner (hopefully with illustrations by Mike McInnerney or maybe John Davis, see the book A Decade Of The Who), then MAYBE it could have been treated in a more serious manner.

Mark, what up with Faith Hill, man?

Jon:

Blame Yahoo, but I wouldn't mind finding out what's up with her, actually.
