The Who Join Together For Corporate Event
By Dean Goodman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Who will perform for the first time in more than
two years when they appear at a corporate event in Las Vegas later this
month, organizers said.
The veteran rock trio will headline an Oct. 29 festival being put on at the
MGM Grand Hotel and Casino by Internet company Pixelon Corp.
The following two nights they will be in Mountain View, Calif., doing
acoustic sets at Neil Young's annual Bridge charity concert. The Who are
also scheduled to play charity shows at Chicago's House of Blues on Nov. 12
and 13.
The Who -- singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend and bassist John
Entwistle -- last performed in Florida on Aug. 16, 1997, the final date of a
``Quadrophenia'' reunion tour.
Daltrey told Reuters in a phone interview Thursday that the band would be on
stage in Las Vegas for about an hour. The threesome will be rounded out by
drummer Zak Starkey, son of former Beatle Ringo Starr, and veteran tour
keyboardist John ''Rabbit'' Bundrick.
He declined to say how much the Who were being paid by Pixelon, but said the
income would help offset costs incurred by the Mountain View and Chicago
shows.
``We're such tarts, we're very expensive tarts,'' Daltrey said. ``Even Bill
Gates couldn't afford us.''
San Juan Capistrano, Calif.-based Pixelon delivers audio and video content
over the Internet. Daltrey said he's not a big Web aficionado. ``I'm
completely not interested. I haven't got time for it in my life. Does that
sound ridiculous?''
Besides the Who, Pixelon's ``iBash '99'' will feature other acts, which will
be announced over the coming weeks. According to Daltrey, performers include
Kiss, Tony Bennett and the Dixie Chicks, although organizers said they had
not been confirmed.
Tickets will go on sale shortly, a statement from Pixelon said. The event
will be broadcast live on the Internet for free at http://www.pixelon.com.
