I would have to agree with ira on this.   the 'acetate' surface sounds were
most likely added to the mix at some point before the album was delivered to
the label for release.   i think pete was going for a true 'bootleg'
experience.   similar surface noise can be heard on the 'pure rock theater'
bootleg cd, whose material comes from acetates of some of the tapes that pete
reportedly destroyed in a bonfire in his back yard.
