I went to the '82 Philadelphia show and I'm with Pete on this one. It was the
audience, not Pete, that was sickening. They seemed to be made up of drunk,
stoned 15 year-olds who `hated that new wave stuff' and just wanted to be in
teenage wasteland -- a reactionary bunch. Kinda like The Beatles' problem
with all the screaming teeny-boppers who made touring no fun for them because
they couldn't hear what they were playing and the audience wasn't listening.
The Philadelphia audience just roared for every little familar thing and
usually roared every time Roger wasn't singing -- which usually meant when
Townshend was soloing. He had really developed a different style around the
time of the guitar change and it must have been frustrating to have the
audience just howling over his playing.
