Michael had some good ideas concerning the draft, although I don't think
they'd pass legal muster anymore than a prohibition on drafting kids
before they finish college.

The draft is presented as a way to rebalance the league, in reality,
it's a marketing tool for the NBA and the rookies. The draft generates a
lot of publicity and excitement.

The draft is also a way to keep teams bidding against each other for new
talent. That effect saves teams a lot more than the guaranteed rookie
contracts cost.

The current draft serves the interests of both the rookies and the
league and, posturing aside, neither would really want to see major
changes. 

I say can the thing.
