Re: The Who Mailing List Digest V9 #273

Ahh, so you're still open to all possibilities?

Kevin:

Alright, I give...you two dragged me into it. And, this is where I stand in general: I believe in a supreme being, but not in a religion. Religion is man made, and everything man makes is flawed.

> Isn't this still just theory?

That's the great thing about Science. It is always theory before proven beyond the shadow of a doubt. Religion, on the other than, declares victory with no evidence whatsoever except the LACK of evidence. It's like "We're right because you can't prove us wrong!"

> Yes, but I had parents!

So did the Big Bang, in a sense. We just haven't found out who or what "they" were. YET.

> Who cut the big cheese to create the gases?

Because you don't know of anything that could doesn't prove there wasn't anything. SOMETHING caused it, we just haven't found out what yet. YET. Might be a supreme being, might be an intergalactic laxative (Donovan reference).

> You're not going to break into song, are you?

"We are billion year old carbon/And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden..."

> I guess it would be God or the gas?

Andy Partridge (XTC) asked of God: "Did you make mankind/After we made you..."

> Yeah, I've never been all too into his prayers and such.

Meher Baba is one of the least offensive practices I've encountered. For one thing, they don't have the usual moronic "You're either with us or against us" mentality. Or the "We're going to heaven and you're not, nah nah nah." that's SO annoying.

> Yes, but Pete makes it *very* clear that he himself believes in a higher
power. A God.

Um....he does WHENEVER it's convenient. At other times, he's as secular as anyone.

> (hoping others better versed in Baba-dome speak up here with insight.)

What you need, my friend, is a visit to the Myrtle Beach Baba Center. I can arrange that.

> How does your "Science is the answer" fit into his stated (not forced)
beliefs though?

Why does science automatically mean that spirituality is null and void? OBVIOUSLY some science is valid...like the computers we're both using right now. Doesn't mean all science is correct. Doesn't mean there's not a creator. What if the creator created evolution (which I believe, otherwise all fossil evidence was planted by the creator to PURPOSELY mislead people...and WHY would he/she/it do THAT?)?

>However, there is a line in "Baba O'Riley" that I sometimes sing out
>with a bit more gusto: "I don't need to be forgiven!!" ;-)

SOME religions don't require "forgiveness." Don't get caught up in the concept that Christianity is the ONLY religion, or the only correct one. Why wouldn't the Big G leave many paths? To think there's only one way is arrogant in the way only a human can be arrogant.
