You didn't miss anything.  The problem was that the audience was so loud
and/or the acoustics were so bad that no one at the show could understand
what he said...IOW, he didn't get any reaction (e.g., a laugh) to his joke.
We, with the benefit of VCRs and soundboard sound, have no trouble
understanding what he says.

You can see the mischief come onto his face when he conceives the joke, and
delivers it, then the disappointment when he realizes no one could
understand him.  Then he visibly sort of "shuts off" from the audience and
goes into a little dance during the intro to the next song ("Eminence
Front").  I always feel sorry for him when I see that clip.
