New Quad Sound (again)

I have read all of the negative assessments of the new Quad and tried to go
back and hear these problems without success. I don't think there is
anything there that is not on the original master tape (plus 23+ years of
degradation). I know that Jon has tweaked a lot of the balances, but I think
what you are hearing is what was originally on the tape but buried in the
original dense mix.

There is also the psychoacoustic phenomenon where a bright background can
give the illusion of a brighter frequency response to a vocal in the
foreground. This is why after the introduction of Dolby (and yes, there were
a lot of misadjusted machines) most people felt like they had lost all of the
high end. All that hiss in the background gave the illusion of strong high
end.

Keith's cymbals can give that same illusion to a vocal. I've listened
carefully to the vocals on Quad, and they sound the same. And as to the
radio at the end of Cut My Hair, that is the normal sound that an AM or
Shortwave Radio makes as the signal strength changes.

The bottom line, I must agree with ML. This Quad is great. It is the best
that can be done with present technology. I love it! If you don't, oh well.
But I don't think we can blame that on a remixing or mastering error.
