Re: Acoustic backing tracks

A local group, the Wipers' (who obviously HEAVILY influence such bands as
Nirvana (they did Return of the Rat on a Wiper tribute - the original rocks
like an F-14), Bush, and Tool (their song "I want - what I want", etc. is a
direct ripoff of the Wipers)), first single in '78 called Up In Flames used
an electric guitar and then miked the strings on the electric guitar raw,
and mixed the two. Hence this ethereal overlay to the very deep, midrangy
guitar - very clever effect. More subtle than an acoustic backing but
the same basic idea....

They had a great drummer, Sam Henry, who I considered
after Moon died to be the greatest original sounding drummer in the world.
Still is when he is inspired to be. He plays in Napalm Beach now. Anyhow,
if you didn't see the Wipers in their original lineup it is your severe loss.
They had the talent, depth, originality, songwriting strength, live presence
(like nobody's business) to dominate. Others that have come since are
pale imitations of them. But this is all old rehash......
