Trunk won't latch

Last night while at a club my friend went out to get something out of the
trunk of my car, a 97 GLX. I forgot to tell him which button to use on the
remote (a clifford alarm) so he just disarmed the alarm and popped the trunk
with the key. I'm not quite sure what he did, but now the trunk won't
latch. It closes all the way, but the hook doesn't catch (i.e. you don't
have to pop anything to open it) and the car doesn't know when the trunk is
open.

Looking at the locking mechanism there is a metal hook on the left and a
black plastic thing on the right. Anyone know what moves or how this
mechanism operates? Since I don't have a working one to look at I can't
tell what's broken. Also if anyone has had this problem, let me know.

Thanks,
John
