It could [hopefully] be the *%$#! self adjusting clutch cable.
If it goes bad,  the symptoms can be the same.

A buddy of mine had similar symptoms - we cut the cable
as a test. Bingo! Clutch locked right up.  We put a manual cable
in its place.
