I would also guess a slipping clutch.  Did you buy the car brand new?  Do 
you drive with your left foot resting on the clutch while cruising?  It 
could also be some kind of fluid dripping on the clutch disc.  My bug did 
this when the flywheel oil seal went bad.  Just some thoughts.
