I too just had my 97 Jetta battery died 2 weeks ago. I decided to get an 
optima yellow cap. Works mint ... just have to rotate the position of the 
battery. I used the factory blanket and the factory bracket. 1 word of advice 
on the factory bracket just have to trim the hold down in the shape of a 1/2 
moon to fit snug against the middle cell. After grinding I took some vacuum 
line to protect the battery from the exposed metal
