OT: WTF, a Volkswagen DERBY??

I was in Ruidoso, New Mexico this past weekend, and I saw a funny little red 
car drive by me.  I look at the front grill, and it has a VW badge on it!!  
It was about the size of a new corolla, really small, boxy rear end.  Unlike 
anything I had ever seen before.

There was a possibility it was driven there from Mexico, as I saw a Jetta CL 
with a Chihuahuha, Mexico, license plate on it..  

Any ideas, or what was that thing??
