RE: [VW-VR6] Cruise control kaput

I have/had this same problem. I took my car into the dealer to have it
looked at, and what they told me (not sure if this is actually the problem
or not) that there was an error code in my ECU which basically stated that
my air intake was too great. I've modded my airbox to increase the flow of
air and get colder air. He said that this error code caused my Cruise to
function in the same manner as yours. He cleared the code and it worked!
Unfortunately not for very long. He had asked me if I had a check engine
light at any point, and I did (most likely when the error occured). My
cruise is still not functioning, and now, after two days at Lime Rock, I
have a check engine light again. I'm thinking of having someone with a VAG
look at the ECU and see if this same error code is in place. The dealer
told me that it would most likely continue to happen.

Not sure if this is the same problems as yours, but I hope it helps!

Subject: [VW-VR6] Cruise control kaput

I know this has been kicked around before but am not sure a consensus ever
came out. Now that it has happened to me I will ask it again.

The cruise control on my 97 GLX is on the fritz. It works some of the time
but will not stay on for very long. Other times it won't engage at all. I
tried the suggestions (pull up on the clutch and brake) and never get good
result. I even pulled up on both clutch and brake and try to engage with no
luck. I know the switch on the turn signal stalk is good (I can hear a
slight click of AM radio interference when I try to turn on or set the
speed) so I am down to a bad cruise control module/relay. I have not
consulted Bentley yet.

Have others had similar problems when the cruise goes bad? Any fixes? Any
diagnostic tests? Thanks for any help.
