Possible EGR Problems

My 95 GLX seems a little sick at times recently.  This started about 2 months ago. The first indicator was just after a cold start during a wet winter afternoon.  It started just fine but the idle was surging between 1000 and 1300 rpms.  The surging stopped after a minute and idled properly.  I sped off and the next time I stopped for a light, it started the same idle surging. After a couple of miles of stop and go it stalled at a light.  It started right back up without the surging but in total it stalled 3 times in a trip of about 15 miles.  Over the course of the last couple months it has repeated this scenario 4 or so times. After scratching my head and reading the Bentley book, I happened upon a oily PCV valve.  Hmmm.  I planned on removing it to inspect it, in the process it fell apart.  I ended up having to buy 4 components to replace the one PCV valve. $192 dealer part.  This got me thinking that this might have been the cause of my surging problem.  The problem has reared its ugly head again 4 days after replacing the PCV.

In my research in the Bentley book they mention that the EGR system might have something to do with these symptoms.  Here in lies my question.

Has anyone had similar problems and what was the fix.

My next steps are to perform the checks listed in the EGR section of the book.

Please advise.........
