Synthetic Oil

I have about 26K on my black beauty and I want to switch to synthetic oil.
Does anyone have any recommendations on which one I should use or if I
should use it at all. What are the advantages and disadvantages of going
with this type of oil? I've seen the list talk about it before but never
really paid attention but since I am up for my oil change, I usually change
every 3k instead of the 5k, I want to be sure that I am not doing anything
wrong.
