Pads and Rotors

Hello again Folks,

One thing that hasn't entered this discussion is the following.

The primary reason that you replace the rotors versus turning them is
that most Brake lathes in the US typically "machine" the rotor versus
"grinding" the rotor. What's the difference? A turned rotor leaves
radial grooves in the rotor much like the grooves on a record (as in
vinyl 33 rpm type). If you look at at new rotor you will notice that it
has a non-directional machined surface. Very few shops will be able to
offer this type of finish when they "turn" your old rotors. All of the
reasons previously given for using new rotors are for this reason and no
other. Rapid pad wear, noise, and ineffective braking and cooling all
will occur with these radial turned rotors. I always replace the rotors,
every time. I like the feel of full thickness pads and rotors versus the
alternative.

The ATE power disks are really good and worth the money, much better
pedal feel and improved stopping power. The ATE pads are OK too although
I prefer the Ferodos.
