'96 Jetta GLX for $13.5K and 39K miles, good deal?

Came across a white '96 Jetta GLX for $13,500 USA bucks, with 39K miles.
I am tempted, because of the VR6. The new Jetta VR6 is gonna run me
$21,000....... so the money savings is tempting. The only thing is that
I was NEVER too fond of the A3 Jetta front end. 

Are the '96 GLX's reliable? I do love the looks of the new A4 Jettas,
but their interior room  seems to have diminished, IMHO.
