what do airbox mods do to torque?

I've been reading that people here are generally happy with various 
airbox mods. I thought that increasing the airflow would increase the hp 
at higher RPM's while actually decreasing the torque at lower RPM's. The 
hp is pretty good starting at 4000, but the low-end torque isn't great, 
and I wouldn't want to do anything to lower it. Is my thinking off-base?
