18" or 17" rims?

I have a 1997 Jetta GLX.  I'd like to get some really nice rims for it but
I'm not sure what size to get.  I know about the problems hitting pot holes
with the larger rims, the extra weight, etc....  But what I want to know is
if you can get an 18 inch wheel/tire combination that doesn't rub.  I've
heard that the 17 inch 205/40/17 combination doesn't rub but I like the
look of 18 inch rims even better.

Any experience with this?
