You've damaged the side wall.  The tire will blow out...it's just a matter of when.  I used to get lumps on my truck tires when I would go off-roading...some times I would get a thousand miles out of  the tire, other times less than a hundred.  It is also a safety issue when you drive on the street (the truck rarely saw the street)... just imagine a tire blowing out when your going around a corner.

I have a tire-related question for you all...the other day, I hit a pretty big pothole at around 45 mph ... other than that aweful crunching noise, it din't seem to cause any problems ... no shaking, pulling or bent rim ... went out this morning and noticed a small lump on the outside sidewall of the tire that hit the pothole...how serious is this?

I'm assuming some type of internal damage occurred...
