California Emissions & Importing

Great news, I'm relocating to CA, and planning on taking the GLX along
with.  Questions for you Californians on the list, and especially anyone
who has brought a Jetta in from out of state.  What is involved with
import?  I looked up the DMV webpage, they assess a $300.00 fee, but you
have to have a valid smog cert.  What is involved?  Are all the cars built
CA compliant?  Or is the engine going to need mods, and should I sell the
car here to save the trouble?  (NOOOO!!!!)

Sorry for a million questions...looking for any insight!
