He never puts gas in it! only 5 gallons at a time.

VW's site doesn't have a GTI-VR6 weight, but edmunds.com claims:

Golf GTI VR6 - 2800 lbs
Jetta GLX - 2927 lbs  (same as VW site, under jetta specs)
